Founders Cemetery, Marker #13; foot marker: M.M.
(1815-1847)
Mary was born 27 April 1815 and died 28 May 1847; the daughter of James and Sarah (Butler) Crosby. We do not know her place of birth or death. Mary married Thomas Moses; son of William and Sarah (Tinkler) Moses. We have not found a record of their marriage and do not know the date or place. William was from St Augustine, Florida and Sarah was from what is now Cumbria in England. Thomas was born in Hebron and died in Richmond. He is buried in Island Cemetery, the active cemetery for Port Maitland and Beaver River.
One of Mary’s ancestors may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia—it simply reads “William Knowlton, 1632”.
Through James, her father, Mary is a Mayflower descendant, being descended from Mayflower passenger, William Brewster.
More about Mary, her family and her children will be found in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.
Please leave a comment if you know more about Mary and her family, particularly the place of her birth and death and the date and place of her marriage to Thomas Moses.
