Raymond, Charles W

Charles W Raymond

Free Will Baptist Cemetery, Marker #30

(1846-1885)

Charles was born in Yarmouth Township 7 May 1846. On 16 Oct 1885 the barque Napier, of which he was master, sailed from Pensacola Florida for Antwerp Belgium with a cargo of deals (planks usually of pine or fir) and boards. It was not heard from. Charles was the son of Eleazer and Mary Eliza (Porter) Raymond who are buried in the same cemetery and named on the same grave marker as that which memorializes their son Charles.

Charles married in Yarmouth Township 26 Dec 1874 Alice Maria Parry, daughter of William and Mary (Sollows) Parry. Apparently they had no children. Charles obituary says only that he left a widow. Alice did not remarry. She is buried in the same lot as her mother and father in Island Cemetery, the active cemetery for Port Maitland and Beaver River.

Charles is a Mayflower descendant, being descended, through his father, from Mayflower passengers: William Brewster, John Howland and John Tilley.

One of Charles’s ancestors, through his mother, may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia—it simply reads “William Knowlton, 1632”.

More about Charles and his family appears in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.
