Calvinist Baptist Cemetery, Marker #4

(1812-1886)

Eunice was born in Yarmouth Township 3 Nov 1812 and died there 26 Oct 1886, the daughter of Jabez and Abigail (Corning) Landers who are buried in Founders Cemetery. We do not know the location where she was born and died within the township which included all of the current Yarmouth Municipality as well as the Town.

Eunice married, probably about 1828 at the age of 16, William Stephens Raymond, son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Robbins) Raymond. He is buried next to Eunice and named on the same grave marker. Eunice is a great granddaughter of Sealed Landers, one of the first settlers in Yarmouth Township, who built a grist mill at the site of the present dam in Milton (Yarmouth North) and after whom Sealed Landers Park is named.

Eunice and William had ten known children, three of whom, Eunice, Joanna and Melvin are also buried in the Calvinist Baptist Cemetery and named on the same marker as their parents. A daughter, Susan Antoinette, died at the age of 1 year 6 months, before the Calvinist Baptist Cemetery was created. She is buried in Founders Cemetery. The other nine children lived into adulthood and married, although four died in their twenties.

One of Eunice’s ancestors, through her mother, may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia—it simply reads “William Knowlton, 1632”.
