Calvinist Baptist Cemetery, Marker #10<\/p>\n

(1810-1861)<\/p>\n

Epitaph:\u00a0Asleep in Jesus, peaceful rest; Whose waking is supremely blest; No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour; That manifests the Saviour\u2019s power.<\/i><\/p>\n

Josiah was born 26 Aug 1810 and died of \u201cinflammation of lungs\u201d in Richmond, Yarmouth Co 23 April 1861, son of Benjamin James and Emma (Crosby) Porter. He married in Yarmouth Township 7 April 1836 Martha Killam who was born 26 May 1817, daughter of Eliakim and Margaret (Mattingly) Killam. We do not know the place of birth of either Josiah or Martha. Following Josiah\u2019s death Martha married Nathaniel Holmes. We do not know the date of her death nor her place of burial.<\/p>\n

Josiah and Martha had seven sons and two daughters. Seven of their children are buried in the Lake George Cemetery and one is buried in Island Cemetery, the active cemetery for Port Maitland and Beaver River. Eight of their children married.<\/p>\n

Josiah\u2019s grave marker had fallen over and was hidden below a few centimetres of earth. It was only found in May 2013. Until its discovery it had been assumed that Josiah, like most of his children, was buried in the Lake George Cemetery but without a marker.<\/p>\n

There are two Josiah Porters buried in Old Stones Cemeteries. This Josiah is the nephew of the Josiah buried in Founders Cemetery.<\/p>\n

Josiah is a\u00a0Mayflower descendant<\/a>. Through his mother he is descended from Mayflower passenger William Brewster.<\/p>\n

One of Josiah\u2019s ancestors, through his mother, may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia\u2014it simply reads \u201cWilliam Knowlton, 1632<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n
