Were it not for photos taken several years ago we would not be able to decipher the details.

Israel was born 16 July 1845 and died 4 Nov 1846. We know neither his place of birth nor his place of death nor the cause of his death. He was the fourth of nine children of Ira and Zilpha (Parry) Raymond who are buried in Island Cemetery, the active cemetery for Port Maitland and Beaver River. As Ira died before Island Cemetery was created it’s likely he was buried first in Founders Cemetery before being removed to Island Cemetery. The removal record says he was first buried in the “Old Yard.” We believe “Old Yard” may have referred to what today we call Founders Cemetery.

Israel had two siblings, Alice and Alexander, who also were first buried in the “Old Yard” and removed to Island Cemetery. It’s interesting that Israel’s remains were not removed as well.

On 4 Nov 1847, exactly one year after Israel died a brother was born. His parents named him Israel Howard. He died in Port Maitland (then called Maitland) in 1866 at the age of 19. His burial place is not known. It seems reasonable to think he might also have been buried in Founders Cemetery.

Israel is a Mayflower descendant. Through his father he is descended from Mayflower passengers Isaac Allerton, John Billington, John Howland and John Tilley. Through his mother he is descended from passenger John Alden. Through both his mother and his father he is descended from passenger Richard Warren.

One of Israel’s ancestors, through his mother, may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia—it simply reads “William Knowlton, 1632”.

More about Israel, his parents and siblings appears in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.

Please leave a comment if you have any additional information about Israel, particularly the places of his birth and death and the cause of his death at about 15 months of age.

Israel Raymond Founders Cemetery, Marker #38 (1845-1846) Today Israel’s grave marker is almost illegible.
