Free Will Baptist Cemetery, Marker #10
(1786-1874)
James was born in Kelley’s Cove 2 July 1786 and died of “old age” in Maitland (now Port Maitland) on 18 or 26 June 1874, the son of James and Hannah (Clements) Kelley and a grandson of the well known Capt James Kelley who founded Kelley’s Cove. James married Phoebe Crosby who is buried next to him with her own grave marker. Their daughter Mary Ann and her husband Nathaniel Sanders are also buried in the Free Will Baptist Cemetery. There is a discrepancy concerning James’s death date. While his grave marker clearly says he died 26 June 1874, his death record says he died 18 June 1874.
James comes from a line of Mayflower descendants, being descended, through his mother, from Mayflower passengers John Alden, John Billington, Samuel Eaton and Samuel Fuller.
More about James, his children, parents, and siblings appears in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.
