Pitman, Asa

Asa Pitman

Free Will Baptist Cemetery, Marker #20

(~1795-1867)

Asa was born in Brooklyn, Yarmouth Township about 1795 and died of “dropsy” (oedema) in Maitland (now Port Maitland) 18 June 1867 (grave marker) or 27 June 1867 (death record) at the age of 71. The informant for Asa’s death record (dated 11 July 1867) was his son-in-law, Robert Jeffery. Asa, a farmer, was the son of Joseph and Abigail (Lovitt) Pitman. He married Sophia (Flint) Shaw, widow of Aaron Shaw. They are both buried in the Free Will Baptist Cemetery as are three of their five daughters: Abby Jane, Catherine (Pitman) Jeffery and Matilda (Pitman) Norton. They also had three sons. Asa would also have been the step-father to Sophia’s daughter, Sophia Shaw.

More about Asa, his wife and children will be found in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.

Please leave a comment if you have any additional information about Asa, particularly the location of his farm, presumably in Port Maitland.
